Oh my goodness, it’s Trelane! One of Star Trek’s most intriguing, mischievous, and rebellious little boys is seen in this episode called The Squire of Gothos. William Campbell played the colorful role, and in doing so was one of the best guest stars ever in the original Star Trek series. It’s great because for

most of the show, we don’t know who Trelane is. All we know is that he has powers and seems to think of the Enterprise landing party as playthings.

There are a number of neat bits in this show, but the best is probably the reveal at the end, when we find out the truth about Trelane.

      • For me, it was greatly enjoyable and really injected that ‘never judge a book by its cover’ adage.

Before we get to the end, though, there’s a lot of drama at play as Trelane becomes the hunter with Kirk the hunted. It’s definitely good stuff, especially because with the drama, there’s this very lively, whimsical quality

to the story which makes it different from similar tales.

You have to wonder if the infamous Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation wasn’t born of this character. There are some commonalities here.

At any rate, Star Trek: The Squire of Gothos is an entertaining show that makes you laugh amid the drama. I like it.
