I’ve been studying with the Open University for over 6 years. It’s a long time but so far it has been worthwhile. For those that don’t know, they are a home study university based in the UK.

In general my experience of the Open University has been positive. There are good points and bad points though. The best thing is the course materials. As courses are home study, the study materials that are provided are well constructed. Most courses offer a

balance between online, course books, dvd and cd. You get a study map or similar to help you along with your studies and things like assessment guide, assignment guide and other materials. The materials are well written and colourful. Although academics materials are designed to be challenging, the Open University always explain concepts well and provide guidance material. There is no real disadvantage by studying from home. You can take part in forums, online chat. You get a tutor that you chat to ...

      • via email or over the phone. They also offer tutorials on most courses. I have found the courses to be well organised and, with the exception of end of course assessments, flexible with essay deadlines.

More negatively, the Open University can be hard to deal with when something goes wrong. My experience has shown that if you need your end of course assessments deadlines extending, then you have to jump from administrative hoops to achieve it. Furthermore, if something goes wrong in your life and

you need to defer the course you have studied so to pick up where you left off at a later date, then it’s even more difficult. The Open University is very inflexible in this scenario, which can be stressful. Courses are quite expensive too.

None-the-less, I would recommend the Open University as a good education provider. They have a large number of courses to choose from and the learning experience with them is good. They offer courses to international and UK based students.
