We recently took a long weekend and went into the mountains of Virginia. We had been in this area before, but had never really done any site seeing. This trip we decided to visit at least one local attraction. We picked Shenandoah Caverns.

The cost per person is $19, but that gets you into two different attractions. First you visit the caverns. Shenandoah Caverns is the only cavern that you have an elevator that takes you down into the caverns as opposed to having to walk up and down stairs.

It is very comfortable in the caverns,

in the mid-50s for temperature. You get a guided tour of the caverns. Our tour guide was very friendly and new quite a bit about the caverns.

They were discovered by two young boys who came down a shaft into the caverns. This shaft is pointed out to visitors. It is a nice walk through the caverns, with a lot of different rock formations to look at.

There are also a few places where pieces of the cavern have come down and now rest on top of other areas, really neat to look at. We really enjoyed ...

      • our tour through the cavern and listening to the guide. Bring your camera for a lot of great photo ops!

In this same building there is a nice little gift shop and upstairs is a display called Main Street of Yesteryear.

Displayed are window decorations from store fronts over the years. Most of them are mechanical in some way and quite a delight to look at. There is also a small museum with the history of the caverns located on this floor.

Included in the ticket price is entrance to American Celebration on Parade. This is located down the

hill from the caverns. Inside you will find floats from all different events.

There are a few you can climb onto to have your picture taken. It is really cool to be able to walk through these displays. I never really realized how big and realer than life these floats are.

Some are animated and all have plaques describing how and when they were used. It really does make for an interesting few hours walking through the caverns and the floats. We will go back again and bring friends and family with us so they can also enjoy both nature and art!
