  • I think that Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment missed a wonderful opportunity by not including any sort of interviews, retrospectives or behind the scenes peaks into what went on in getting the controversial show on the air and how the American people responded to a show that was a first of its kind during the first year
  • It could have been real insightful, interesting and ultimately entertaining, too
  • I paid thirty dollars for this set, and I'm happy with it, but I could have been extremely happy with it if there had been more to it than just the first thirteen episodes of the season

This is the season where it all began for the unforgettable and groundbreaking sitcom that forever changed the television landscape. I think that Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment missed a wonderful opportunity by not including any sort of interviews, retrospectives or behind the scenes peaks into what went on in getting the controversial show on the air and how the American people responded to a show that was a first of its kind during the first year. There’s no bonus features related to the show whatsoever, just some unrelated previews of other shows. I would have loved hearing from some of the surviving cast members, from the writers, the directors, anybody that was involved in the pre-production and

production of the show. It could have been real insightful, interesting and ultimately entertaining, too.

Instead, all that’s given on this set are the episodes. Now sure, the episodes are the reason that I purchased this season set, but special features and bonus material would’ve made this set a real gem for fans of the series. I wouldn’t have minded paying even an extra ten dollars if there would’ve been at least a half hour’s worth of bonus material. I paid thirty dollars for this set, and I’m happy with it, but I could have been extremely happy with it if there had been more to it than just the first thirteen episodes of the season.

      I do feel ...

      • that Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment did a good job of transferring these episodes to DVD. The picture quality is excellent, with character expressions and the sets looking clean and defined. The audio is also fine, with every word coming through loud and clear, expect when the audience’s laughter overlaps with a line. That can’t be helped though since the show was recorded in front of a live audience, and the actors and actresses sometimes found part of their lines to be drowned out by the laughter. I wish that Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment would’ve taken such care to include bonus features as they did to ensure that these episodes looked and sounded great on DVD.

        This season had

a few memorable episodes that really stood out and set the show apart from a typical situation comedy. One episode deals with the emotional pain attached to having a miscarriage and another deals with how some people, represented in Archie Bunker’s character, have trouble with the idea of a family that isn’t of the same race, moving into the neighborhood. Issues of miscarriage and racism will always be difficult subjects to portray, but the show handles them, particularly the latter with comedy, and the former, with heart.

This is an entertaining season set that could have been even more entertaining had there been more to it than just the episodes. Nonetheless, this set still gets a solid “9″ from me.
