I must admit that I only read this book because of the movie version that was about to be shown then. I make it a habit to read the book first before watching the movie version. Turned out that my reading experience was so splendid that I regret grabbing the book only now when it’s been in the bookshelf for many years already. The author Alice Sebold is definitely gifted in writing. This novel is basically a suspense thriller that she

also made it very dramatic to appeal to the emotions of the readers. I also found it very unique that the narrator of the story, Susie, is a dead person. Now that is a totally different perspective that I’m sure none of the other writers have ever thought of doing. It probably is one of the best appeals of the book. Much of the emotions emanating from the story come from the perspective of a dead girl who felt completely lost ...

      • and devastated as she watches over her family succumb to depression because of her death.

The Lovely Bones gives made me think of the after life. Is it really true that we will be reunited with our loved ones in heaven? Susie said that she has not met her grandmother in heaven. Maybe it’s such a big place that it is impossible to see your loved ones again there. And in that case, it is a totally different life out there

with strangers that will become your friends also in time.

More than the gruesomeness of murder in general, Lovely Bones also made me reflect about relationships with family. It’s something very primary to all of us. Important yet taken for granted most of the time. It made me think about making every second count and taking action for your life. We live on borrowed time and we never know when it will be taken back. From up there, it’s a totally different world.
