Eleven years after the Columbo series left the year, Peter Falk returned to his legendary role in what would be a new resurrection for the character. No longer a part of the Mystery Movie weekly rotation or any regular appearance schedule, this began a string of made for TV movies, bringing all the best of the police lieutenant to a new generation.

This first outing, Columbo Goes to the

Guillotine, aired on February 6, 1989. It would be followed by 23 more TV movies, all the way into the 2003 year. That’s great a showing.

This movie is much like the movie that inspired the Columbo series. It was called Prescription Murder and starred Gene Barry as the villain. The reason I say they are a like is that there is a long built up ...

      • of the crime and the people involved before we actually ever see our first glimpse of Columbo. It was too long, in my opinion. I care more about the detective than seeing the prolonged introduction of who is who and what’s going on.

In this production, Anthony Zerbe guest stars, along with Anthony Andrews and Karen Austin. The focus is on psychic abilities (mind reading, to be

specific) and an institute struggling for funding. Are they legit? That’s part of the mystery. Austin has a couple of decent moments, but she overdoes it a bit in this interpretation.

It was great to see Columbo again. The story is typical Columbo, and there’s enough there to remind us why we loved the series. Obviously, it did well enough to do many more after this one.
