Columbo: Columbo Goes to College is one of my favorite movie editions of the Columbo series. Robert Culp has a great role as a prominent community figure who has to deal with his college student son being involved in the murder of one of his college professors. Stephen Caffrey plays the son with Gary Hershberger as his best friend. The

show opens with Columbo being a guest speaker at the professor’s class. Naturally, his disheveled appearance makes everyone under estimate him.

Here are a few thoughts on this episode:

–I love the way he sets up the college students. It’s one of the most intentional bits where we really see the set up on Columbo’s part happening. It’s terrific.

      –It’s neat to see ...

      • the explanation of technology. Columbo is really from another era, and I always enjoy his response to modern capabilities, such as the small camera that was crucial to this story.

–This is a family affair of sorts. First, the show is directed by E.W. Swackhamer. Second, Swack’s wife, Bridget Hanley, appears as Mrs. Rusk. Third, his daughter, Elizabeth, plays Sara,

one of the college students. I’m a big fan of Bridget’s and fondly remember Swack from his work on Here Come the Brides.

There’s also a lot of superb supporting players in this movie, including Guy Stockwell, William Lucking, Jim Antonion, Katherine Cannon, and Alan Fudge. Great cast. Nice script. Lots of fun. This is one I love to watch.
