Columbo: Uneasy Lies the Crown has quite a few well known names in it, including several famous folks who play themselves. It’s a unique setup for the murder of the movie where the guilty party uses a poker game as part of his alibi, not that it works. The story was written by Steven Bochco.

I was first attracted to this 1991 movie, not just because it was another Columbo movie (and I’ve

seen all of them numerous times over the decades), but because this one featured James Read as Dr. Wesley Corman. Read came to my attention in North and South where he starred opposite Patrick Swayze. North and South is just my absolute favorite mini-series of all time, so I tend to notice Read when he shows up on things.

There’s a second Swayze connection with Marshall Teague, who appears as a famous heart ...

      • throb named Adam Evans, who is a dental patience of Corman’s.

The poker game has Corman playing cards with Nancy Walker, Dick Sargent, and Ron Cey. There’s some fun when Columbo meets them all for the first time.

The celebrity fun for me came with good supporting performances by Paul Burke, Lynne Marta, and Jo Anderson.

I do think there’s some continuity problems with how long Columbo has been on the force. I’m not sure

it’s ever been accurate, going back even to regular seasons of the show. He used to talk about 15 years and such, but there was a gap of a decade plus between the series and the movies, so when he says 22 years here, it immediately rings wrong.

This isn’t the best Columbo outing, but it has some fun moments and some solid acting. It runs a bit slow here and there, but it’s still Columbo.
