Athelstaneford is a small village in Scotland, in East Lothian. I visited here out of the interest in the history of the site, which is reported to the the birthplace of the Saltire, Scotland’s national flag.

It’s mostly farmland in the area, but I did find the Doocot Flag Heritage Center, a very small but enchanting place set up for those interested in how the saltire came to be.

      There is an

old church on the site, complete with burial ground, and a small flag monument in the back.

But for the real story, you have to go inside the tiny, ancient dovecot behind the church.

The door is very short and you must basically bend over and crawl your way in, which just made it all the more genuine and fascinating to me.

Inside you will find it restored, and you’ll be greeted ...

      • with a surprisingly creative audio-visual presentation explaining the origin of the flag and the battles fought in the area.

The sky blue background and solid white cross that makes up the flag’s appearance is based on “St.

Andrew’s Cross” which was believed to have appeared in the sky on the day of a great battle at Athelstaneford.

I found the presentation absolutely charming and a moving tribute.

        There is no admission

fee, but a box for donations is available which I happily contributed to.

We were the only visitors there at the time, which I found sad.

I wish it were promoted more, especially knowing what a proud nation Scotland is and how it truly reveres its history and its flag.

I hope that locals encourage tourists to visit the center, because small and simple though it is, it should not be missed.
