  • Probably the best feature of this camera is its screen
  • There is a three times optical zoom (albeit with only six zoom steps, which I think is a bit too few) and beyond that a four times digital zoom, which is about as pointless as digital zooms usually are
  • For some reason when you turn the camera on the lens extends in two distinct movements - I guess that this is done in case there is something in the way, to avoid potential damage

The Advent MP51 digital camera is probably not the model that would come most obviously to your mind if you were in the market for a small and inexpensive camera, and to be frank it was not in the forefront of my own mind either when I picked it up at a bargain price online a couple of years ago. Obviously it is not from one of the major manufacturers, and as such some people will probably look upon it with a degree of suspicion, but my own view is that while it is not the greatest camera the world has ever seen, it is a good deal more than just a toy and is perfectly capable of fulfilling a useful role as a second or backup camera to lug around in a bag or for situations where you are reluctant

      to risk something more expensive.

One thing that is immediately obvious about the MP51 is that it is very compact. Yes, there are other models on the market today that are even smaller, but with the exception of certain “fashion” models that have diminutive size as their only selling point you are probably quite unlikely to find one that is much smaller than this. It can easily be slipped into a jacket pocket, and even the average pair of jeans should be able to accommodate it so long as you are willing to put up with a slightly less svelte profile for a bit! Its shape is also very regular, with no significant projecting parts which might risk being knocked or damaged in transit.

Probably the best feature of this camera is its screen. OK, so a 2.5 inch LCD is nothing special

by today’s standards, but considering that this is very much a low end model I was more than satisfied with its performance. The screen is bright and clear, all the icons show up very well, and there is very little lag as you move the camera about, even in fast moving situations. When you half depress the shutter to focus, which incidentally is done pretty swiftly, on to the screen comes the shutter speed and aperture figure, although this is for information only as there is (not really surprisingly) no true manual mode on the MP51.

For a camera at this end of the market, the MP51 has an awful lot of options. There are a large number of scene modes, for a start, including some that I really am not sure what they do - “Food mode”, for example! On top ...

of this, if you select P mode you gain quite considerable control over the camera’s settings - not only can you select the usual stuff such as the ISO rating and the exposure compensation, but you are able to use more advanced techniques such as exposure bracketing, spot metering and accurate white balance. I was really quite impressed with this.

Advent do not make their own lenses, and so this camera uses a Pentax lens. It is very small, and to be honest I don’t really think it is the best lens Pentax have ever made, but if you leave the camera on the top quality settings then it is quite good enough for snapshots. There is a three times optical zoom (albeit with only six zoom steps, which I think is a bit too few) and beyond that a four times

digital zoom, which is about as pointless as digital zooms usually are. For some reason when you turn the camera on the lens extends in two distinct movements - I guess that this is done in case there is something in the way, to avoid potential damage.

It would be silly of me to pretend that the Advent MP51 is something that everybody should rush out and buy, because it isn’t. It’s not ancient, and takes standard SD memory cards, but there are better cameras on the market. However, given its extremely low price online these days, I do suggest that if you happen to see one around for a few pounds and are in need of a simple camera which you won’t have to worry too much about losing, then this is a model that is worthy of at least some consideration.
