We recently did some interior remodeling in our home, and one of the things we did was to repaint several of the rooms. We also wanted to give all the ceilings a fresh coat of paint to spruce them up a bit along with the other newly painted walls. I came across an interesting product called Valspar 1-Gallon Interior Latex Flat Color Changing Ceiling Paint, which was specifically designed to paint ceilings. The paint actually went on purple at first, but then changed to white when it dried. The idea of the color changing paint was that you could actually see where you were painting over the other ceiling paint, so you wouldn’t miss spots when painting. The purple color would show you right where

you had painted and then it would dry to a white. I thought this product was a good idea and would be a big help for me when painting so I purchased it. The price was about $18 per gallon. I purchased 2 gallons to start, and figured I could go back and buy more for other rooms in my home if I liked the product.

I brought it home and started my painting project on my bedroom ceiling. The paint did in fact go on purple, so I could see where it was going. But I noticed that it didn’t offer a lot of coverage, so I had to go over the same area several times. Also, the change in color happens faster than ...

      • I expected, and when it dries, you can still see the old paint underneath. I applied 3 coats and I still didn’t have good coverage, and it was hard to get a smooth look. After 3 coats, my ceiling looked awful. It seemed like each additional coat I put on did not blend well with the previous coats. The paint had dried to a white like it was supposed to, but then when I went back to do touch-ups, the new paint and the old paint were different colors, even when they dried, and it looked a mess by the time I was done. The paint I used for touch-ups seemed to remain purple even after it was dry. The colors didn’t match
up and the whole project looked terrible.

So overall, my experience with this paint was not a good one. It ended up costing me more time and money because I had to get a different paint to once again go over the ceiling to cover the mess made by the color changing paint. So, even though I like the concept of this paint, for me it didn’t work out, and I would not recommend it to anyone looking to paint a ceiling or any other surface in their home. It’s not worth the money or time and effort because the end result is unsatisfactory. I would recommend hiring a professional for this sort of project, or if you plan to do it yourself, don’t use this color changing paint.
