Requiem for a Falling Star from the second season of Columbo is one of those shows where Columbo acts all befuddled at meeting a celebrity. It’s an act Peter Falk has down pat in this character of the police lieutenant. He disarms the star by practically falling all over them. It’s something he’ll do many times during the course of the series and movies.

The very talented Anne Baxter plays

Nora Chandler, a well known actress who gets Columbo’s heart beating a little faster. Kevin McCarthy, who I just can’t stand, plays her overprotective doctor and friend. He comes on a bit too strong, but that’s his character. It’s all about where you are on the society ladder.

As always, there’s no secret about the murderer, and in this case, it is Nora Chandler. The victim is Jean Davis ...

      • (Pippa Scott), only Jean wasn’t the intended target. That was Jerry Parks (Mel Ferrer).

One of the intriguing things about the show is how the story takes a turn from focusing on Jean’s death to the disappearance of Nora’s husband. That is awesome how it’s done.

Two scenes I really like occur towards the end of the show. First is when Columbo rides around the studio lot with Fallon (Frank Converse).

Converse is fun to watch, and there’s just something fun about the questioning that goes on here. Second is right after that when Columbo meets famous designer, Edith Head. Head did a bunch of cameos like this one. It’s priceless seeing Baxter and Head trying to get Columbo to give up his old tie for a new one.

This show has some wonderful acting, and it’s a decent story.
