  • After progressing for a while the song takes on quite an industrial sound and the heavy aspects of the track really blend with that eerie aspect of it, which I suppose is one way of defining industrial metal now that I think about it, and the track finishes off in a mixed blend of the two aspects which the listener was able to experience throughout about the first half of the track

Heresy, one of the darkest sounding Nine Inch Nails tracks throughout their entire discography, is a track which appears on what is considered the band’s best work, The Downward Spiral. I just finished reviewing the track Only which I reviewed as being pretty eerie but not so much of a heavy track. Well, with Heresy, the song has both quite an eerie feel but also an extremely

heavy and aggressive sound as well, particularly during the chorus – one which certainly stands out from the rest of the song due to the very raw sound on the instruments and on Reznor’s voice. I mentioned in a previous review for a Nine Inch Nails track that Reznor offers examples for different sounds and tones that he can offer in one track, and he does that ...

      • here as well. In the verses, Reznor sings in a slightly higher pitch which is how he achieves the eerie feel which I mentioned early and during the chorus Reznor really just screams the lyrics in one of his more aggressive deliveries up to this point in the band’s career. After progressing for a while the song takes on quite an industrial sound and the heavy aspects
of the track really blend with that eerie aspect of it, which I suppose is one way of defining industrial metal now that I think about it, and the track finishes off in a mixed blend of the two aspects which the listener was able to experience throughout about the first half of the track. Certainly one of the most aggressive tracks on The Downward Spiral and one of my favorites.
