Have Gun - Will Travel: Love’s Young Dream featured Gunsmoke’s Ken Curtis as a colorful character named Monk. Of course, this was before Curtis made that jump on Gunsmoke. He’s a hoot in this bit, but I kept waiting for him to call Paladin, “Mr. Dillon” or something. It’s that voice. It’s so distinctive.

      Monk was

quite endearing, and so was this episode of the half-hour western series. The show often switched back and forth between very serious, downbeat dramas and humorous, upbeat comedic efforts, such as Love’s Young Dream. I like this one because it had something a tad different and that was in the very character of Monk. He was ...

      • a stretch from what we’ve seen in other, more lighter fare outings.

The other guest stars were adequate, but there was nothing as special with them as there was with Curtis. Lorna Thayer was okay as Augusta, the object of Monk’s affection. Then there were Mike Mazurki and Burt Reynold’s good buddy, Hal Needham in a small role.

        The

basic story was the oddball falling in love with the beautiful woman and trying to woo her, with the guidance of one Paladin. There’s a song that is crucial to this, but I don’t know if Curtis can sing or if he was dubbed. It was a nice song, though.

So, good romantic short comedy for this episode.
