Now, I am a moderately big fan of the Guitar Hero games. As such, you need a good Guitar Hero controller in order to effectively play the games. Since the release of the original Guitar Hero for the PlayStation 2, there have been many different versions of the different guitar hero controller, and today I want to talk about the one that comes with Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock for the PlayStation 3.

First off, despite being a controller and most controllers are fairly small, this controller is an imitation of a real guitar, and as such, it’s significantly larger than a regular controller. Actually, it’s about 2 feet and a half in height! Now of course, this is pretty small when compared to legitimate guitar, but this isn’t a real guitar, it’s an imitation of a real guitar meant to simulate the experience and to be honest, in the

heat of the moment when playing the game with this controller, it does a really good job. Still this isn’t perfect. Now the quality of the plastic is actually really inconsistent. The neck of the guitar feels like it’s made of a really cheap plastic, but the buttons on the neck of the guitar feel like they’re made of good stuff. Then for the rest of the guitar, it’s actually all pretty solid, but then there’s the strap. The strap is pretty cheap. It seems legit at first, but then after awhile you start to notice that the leather parts of the strap start to come undone, and it starts to look like crap.

Now this controller is specifically to be used for guitar hero games, and as such, since it’s not meant for regular games, there is a limited amount of buttons on it. There’s the 5 fret buttons,

      • green, red, yellow, blue and orange, there’s the directional pad, which on its own is a pretty piss poor pad, but it’s not really meant to be used for anything other than the Home Menu, so it’s ok, the Home button itself, the strumming bar, the start and select buttons, and the wammy bar. All of this is pretty much made especially for guitar hero games, so I don’t really advise trying this controller on normal games. Now since I am talking about the controller intended for the PlayStation 3, I must mention something important. This controller is actually a wireless one; however, to actually connect it to your PlayStation 3, the guitar SHOULD come with a USB port device that you should connect into one of the USB ports on the PlayStation 3 in order to be wirelessly connected to the controller. Now, that’s not the end of
it, this controller is also battery powered. You need 2 AA batteries in order to power this puppy, and I played with the guitar for hours on end and this mostly has to do with the quality of the batteries themselves, but I didn’t find myself switching batteries in and out constantly, so that says something about how well the controller consumes energy.

Well honestly, if you like Guitar Hero, have a PlayStation 3, the black Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock version is a pretty legit version. It’s the one I commonly use and I haven’t had any real problems with it. I mean, it’s not perfect, if it had worked like the regular Dual Shock 3/Sixaxis controllers for the PlayStation 3 which charge their own, that would have been great instead of needing batteries, but whatever, it’s still a legit controller. I give it an 8 out of a 10, pretty solid.
