The Cyprus Museum is heralded as holding one of the greatest archaeological collections in the Mediterranean. It hosts a continual stream of tour parties, and there are always coaches parked outside.

With this in mind, I had great expectations as to what I would find when I passed through its doors.

There is a small entrance charge to visit the museum of £1.

50 (Cyprus Pounds), for which you gain admittance and a leaflet summarizing the contents of the

      collection and its highlights.

You then work your way through the galleries in an anti-clockwise direction, passing from prehistoric times through the Bronze and Iron Ages through to the Graeco-Roman period, witnessing the development of Cypriot culture through its pottery, jewelry, grave goods, religious items and so forth.

However, whilst I’m sure that it is a first rate collection, the explanatory panels (in Greek and English) are long and detailed.

For someone who is not either (a) an ...

      • archaeologist, or (b) a specialist in the periods mentioned, much of the information was either too technical or too detailed.

Furthermore, there was a distinct lack of labeling of individual items, and it was not always clear what their purpose had been.

To get the most out of a visit, it is perhaps best to go with a tour group, so that you will be guided around and have everything explained to you.

        As far as facilities are

concerned, there are adequate toilets, although they are probably not very accessible for anyone using a wheelchair.

There is an outdoor coffee shop (probably not so great, or open, in winter) and a small bookshop, although the latter seems to sell a small number of pretty serious looking publications.

I would say that the Cyprus Museum is definitely worth a look if you are in Nicosia, but maybe you should gem up on your archaeological terms first (or visit with an archaeologist!).
