When Raymond Burr couldn’t film his role as Perry Mason, several movies for television were produced without him, utilizing other Hollywood stars as A-class lawyers. I really wished they hadn’t done that. It was a waste and a sham. They would have done better to have made new movies without the Perry Mason moniker.

In A Perry Mason Mystery: The Case of the Jealous Jokester, veteran Hal Holbrook was brought

on as cowboy attorney Bill McKenzie. He comes to town and has one scene with Barbara Hale, who hooks him up with her assistant and then takes off to join Perry who is trying a case for the world court. That’s it for the Perry we know and love.

The only thing that remains is the use of Ken Malansky, Perry’s young assistant lawyer who fills the private detective role.

      • That gave Billy Moses employment, so I’m sure he was happy about it.

McKenzie goes to work when his niece is accused of murdering actress Josie Joplin (Dyan Cannon). All this is really is showing how publicity crazy some Hollywood types are. It’s a crazy story.

Guest stars include Tony Roberts as Josie’s cheating husband, David Rasche, Tina Yothers, Victoria Jackson, and Holland Taylor as the aforementioned assistant of Della’s, Janice.

There’s also an appearance by James McEachin as Lt. Brock, which is always a plus. He’s a dynamic performer.

Holbrook knows his craft, and his Wild Bill had some fine moments. Cannon was zany as she often is, which is somehow alluring. Between the two, they did manage to bring some zip to this movie. Still, it’s not Perry Mason, and it shouldn’t have that name attached to it.
