Do you love sushi? Then you’ll love BlueFin. Their conveyor belt sushi (kaiten-sushi) fills your stomach without emptying your wallet. Because of their location beside Portland State, the restaurant is frequented by many students including numerous students from Japan. That’s always a good sign! If Japanese people don’t want to eat at a sushi restaurant, then neither do I!

When diners enter, they are warmly greeted and usually seated immediately (except during the busiest times when there’s a waiting list). I love sitting on the east or south sides which are the main vantage points for watching the sushi chefs in action. Bar stools facing the counter

make up most of the seating, and there are a few booths at right angles to the belt along one side.

Green tea, as much as you can drink, is free. I love cradling the lovely Japanese-style tea cup in my hands and letting the aroma waft upward before sipping. A range of soft drinks and Japanese beers are available. Lucky for me that Kiran Ichiban, my favorite, is often on sale.

As with other conveyor belt sushi restaurants, BlueFin uses the plate color system to price their offerings. The prices range from the least expensive orange plates at $1.25 to the purple plates at ...

      • $3.50. However, Mon-Fri from 5-9 pm and all day on Saturday, even a color-blind person can dine with ease: all plates are $1.50. What a great deal!

Because BlueFin is only 1 block from my home, I am a frequent diner, particularly during the discount times mentioned above. In case you think they put out only the “cheap stuff” during the $1.50 hours, you will be pleasantly surprised. And if there’s something you want that isn’t on the belt, you can place a special order.

In addition to a wide range of sushi, they also offer gyozas, miso soup, cucumber salad, edamame, fried calamari, fresh fruit salad,

and so much more. As mentioned earlier, you can special order any dish that isn’t already made. The waitresses remember my favorites and always ask me if they can put in an order for anything missing from the belt. The wait staff are always super friendly and helpful. My favorite is Alex; she is just awesome!

The restaurant is always very neat and clean, even at the end of the evening. I particularly love that the glass walls on two sides allow the natural light to pour in.

If you’re on a limited budget and/or just want a quick bite to eat, BlueFin is the perfect place!
