David Copperfield, or The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (which he never meant to publish on any account), is one of Dickens most famous novels. It is also the one which is most autobiographical.

It tells the story of David Copperfield, who after his father dead is pestered by his new

step father and the step fathers sister.

He is sent off to school, and after his mother and her new born baby both die, he’s sent off to work by his step father.

When his employer is sent to prison, he runs off to his only living relative, his aunt Betsey.

She adopts him, gives him a new name and ...

      • after that life gets much easier for David.

The books follow him and his friends until he’s happily married with children.

One of the main reasons I like this book is David’s aunt, Betsey Trotwood.

Unlike most of Dickens good female characters she’s an active, original woman with her own ideas and enough time and money to make a difference.

The same applies to David’s nurse Peggoty, who’s both funny and kind.

I also like the descriptions of the ship voyage to Australia, it makes me very grateful I took the plane when I went there!

Most of the book is written from the point of view of the first person narrator, which makes it more personal than the earlier novels by Dickens.
