  • I like the clean lines of the restaurant and the artwork, but found the interior to be very cramped and noisy
  • My personal favourite is the Crispy Szechuan Duck
  • The taste is amazing, complimented by fresh spring onions and cucumber, subtle plum sauce and as many pancakes as you want, nicely kept warm in bamboo containers

Mao Tai is a great example of what a Chinese restaurant should be. The service is fast and efficient, the food is fresh and tasty, and the ambiance is busy and bustling.

This restaurant is located in Fulham on the King’s Road. Whilst it is a great location if you live within walking distance, the fact that it is on the King’s Road, close to residential areas means that parking is impossible. The road is so busy, in fact, that you can’t even stop outside for a few minutes.

Surrounding roads are mostly permit controlled which means you cannot park unless you are a resident, and parking meters are scarce, and expensive if you can find one.

Once inside, the décor is modern and light. Friendly staff greet you, and take your coats etc whereby they disappear off the main floor to an unknown region upstairs. I like the clean lines of the restaurant and the artwork, but found the interior to be very cramped and noisy. As soon as a couple of tables are occupied, the acoustics bounce off the ceiling, and you start speaking louder and louder to be heard by your dinner companions. I also thought the tables were very close together, a function of the restaurant area being surprisingly small.

I have always found the time between ordering your food and it being delivered to your table incredibly fast. Usually this is a sign that food has been pre-prepared and then reheated, but at Mao Tai, you can tell that every dish is prepared to order and that they only use the freshest ingredients. My ...

personal favourite is the Crispy Szechuan Duck. It is brought to the table whole, and your server will proceed to shred the duck in front of you so that you know exactly what you are getting and how fresh it is. The taste is amazing, complimented by fresh spring onions and cucumber, subtle plum sauce and as many pancakes as you want, nicely kept warm in bamboo containers.

As with many Chinese restaurants, Mao Tai’s strengths lie in their appetizers and Duck dishes, simply because this is where you can show

culinary artistry. The dishes are beautiful to look at, but absolutely divine to eat. Main courses are great, but often look exactly the same as you would find in mainstream Chinese restaurants.

Mao Tai is expensive. This is partly a function of the location, the Kings Road is not exactly a cheap area. It is also partly due to the culinary expertise of the chefs and the quality of food that is served.

This Chinese restaurant is worth a trip out to Fulham, and should become a staple of anyone living close by.
