The Dean Martin Comedy Hour went political with its roast of Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, who was widely used in stand up routines by comedians throughout the country. Humphrey was The Man of the Week and the dais had a few political comics and other types on it, which was appropriate.

      Baseball manager

Leo Durocher was a roaster. He was married to an actress, if I recall correctly, so I think that’s why he was on multiple celebrity roasts. He did have good timing and knew how to tell a joke.

Author Donald Rice appeared as well. Rice was authoring a book on Humphrey ...

      • at the time, so he had a lot of gathered information to work with.

Gene Kelly did a bit with Humphrey’s asserted personal diary as given to him by Muriel Humphrey. It was a neat gimmick and worked well.

Mort Sahl was on the podium, too. He often did political satire so he

was a perfect dais member. I don’t really think he’s that funny, but he fit the theme.

Humphrey was a colorful soul. I remember seeing him on a number of programs, so seeing him on this show wasn’t really much of a surprise, and it was fairly entertaining. I’d watch it again.
