The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast continued with a tribute to, of all people, and I can’t even fathom why, Evel Knievel. Taped in Las Vegas, as always, the roasters included Ernest Borgnine, Gabe Kaplan, and a slew of other folks who have basically nothing to do with Knievel, whose claim to fame is trying to kill himself by jumping over things on his motorcycle.

Naturally, there were jokes about not

driving with Evel, his daredevil activities, and his broken bones. Some were funny and others were off the mark.

Glen Campbell was visibly cracking up at Milton Berle when he joked about Evel’s next big jump being over the King Family. Glen laughed hard about a lot of things throughout the hour.

Once again, William Conrad reused material. These folks had things written for them much of the time,

      • so someone is just plain lazy. I’ve heard it before, and it was Conrad’s lines, too, so I’m not sure where the fault lies.

Glen Campbell stood up, screeched his name, and that’s pretty much all he said. Strange. He was followed by the always shy Georgia Engel, wearing a dress she’s worn before, too. She does the same thing all the time. Back in the

day, I suppose it was cute. Now it seems campy.

Surprisingly, Cliff Robertson had one of the best routines, talking about inducting Evel to the Bravery Hall of Fame. It was his dialog about who was already there that was so funny.

Evel himself did okay in his retaliation segment, but it was a little too forced and unnatural to be fun.

The show is okay, but it’s hardly a stellar outing.
