Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show sidekick Ed McMahon was the Man of the Week on this edition of The Dean Martin Comedy Hour. Carson was roasted himself a few episodes after this one. Oddly, Carson didn’t attend this roast, and McMahon wasn’t at Carson’s. You’d think that NBC could have done

something about that. It would have made a world of difference.

Roasters for the evening included Dom Deluise, Pat Buttram, Jackie Vernon, Jack Carter, Dionne Warwick (Martin refers to her as Dimples at one point), Ernest Borgnine, and Steve Landesburg, who plays some ridiculous character (hate these bits on the roasts).

      Charo showed up to ...

      • shake her assets to the delight of the male members of the dais. Sadly, she was one of the best parts of this rather drab roast. There just wasn’t much special about it at all.

Carter had a few good quips, but Warwick was a bore with her bit about Ed being one

of her kind and ‘whiting up’ before he appears.

This roast for the famous sidekick was really a bit of a disappointment and for me was lacking in entertainment. There weren’t even the expected comparisons between McMahon and Martin, which one would expect from their drinking reputations. I was glad when the end came.
