  • Along with husband Gary Morton, there was Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller, Ginger Rogers, Vivian Vance, Jack Benny, Totie Fields (she was hysterical), Rowan and Martin, Don Rickles, Henry Fonda, Gale Gordon, and a slew of the regular roasters

Lucille Ball has been on the celebrity roast shows as a roaster of the honoree, and this was her turn on the hot seat in The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast, taped in Las Vegas. Dean Martin, as always, is the roastmaster. He pretends to be drunk, which was his trademark, crazy as that sounds. He actually zinged Lucy about first husband, Desi Arnaz, which

      was gutsy.

Now the dais on this show is how all the dais should have been. There were some A-class performers who came, and that probably says a lot about Lucille Ball.

      • regular roasters. That’s a big panel and a worthy one.

This show was a laugh track — genuine, hearty, wonderful laughs! This is the roast I’ve been waiting for. From Gary Morton talking about how the electric blanket would be on ‘headache’ that night, to Henry Fonda telling a true story about how he and Jimmy Stewart double dated years earlier with Ginger Rogers and

Lucy. It was a heck of a story, and as the audience roared, Lucy and Ginger were both nodding their heads and telling those around them, “It’s true.”

I could write paragraph after paragraph about the excellent brand of humor on this episode. There were no flops. Everyone hit a home run, including Lucy’s zing-filled retaliation at the end. This is the roast to see!
