Believe it or not, even tennis guru Bobby Riggs was worthy to be the Man of the Week on The Dean Martin Comedy Hour. It’s amazing who they honored, and that’s not always good. Martin had a few good opener zingers, including some about the big Billie Jean King match. Now

she should have been there. She would have had some great things to say, I’m sure.

The first roaster of the evening was Vincent Price. I love Price, and he was funny, but what’s the connection to Riggs? A paycheck, I guess. Ditto for Chuck Conners, though I must admit to ...

      • enjoying seeing him in this type of venue.

Country singer Lynn Anderson was very sweet and told a joke about Riggs and rabbit, while Wayne Newton added his version of humor. I don’t think either of these two even met the tennis star before the night. Wayne had that long hair; looked pretty

        funny.

They did have a lot of sports types, including female tennis player Rosemary Casals. Baseball’s Leo Durocher was surprisingly good, and then there was Alex Karras. He had a political rip that got some laughs.

So, the hour honoring Bobby Riggs was okay but not a real gut-buster. I’ve seen better, and worse.
