The Dean Martin Comedy Hour: Carroll O’Connor honored the All in the Family star as Man of the Week for a merry bit of entertainment with a number of decent humor routines and unusual dais members. It wasn’t often in those days that you’d find the head of a rival network on

an opposing network show, but that’s what happened here with CBS’s head honcho talking in honor of O’Connor.

There was a rebel rousing exchange between dais speakers Don Rickles and Redd Foxx that was, well, entertaining in an odd sort of way. It was all about race, so it got very robust and ...

      • loud. It was all comedy, though.

A recorded group of messages were played by entertainers not at the roast, and some of those were of interest.

I still don’t like all the character getups that some of the comics appear as. I don’t think the roasts needed that type of segment, but that’s

just me. Some people love to see comics play these crazy roles. I just don’t think they are that funny overall.

O’Connor had some good retorts at the end for some of the dais roasters, like Barry Goldwater.

Overall, this particular roasting event in honor of O’Connor made for a reasonable hour of entertainment.
