  • The problem with some of these shows is that instead of being a great gimmick as part of Dean's comedy hour with some really terrific performers, it became this weekly show of its own with people being roasted because they had NBC shows or were just high profile

Well, even Hugh Hefner got into being The Man of the Week for this The Dean Martin Comedy Hour edition. A lot of these original roasts have been repackaged under the moniker of The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, the evolution of the roasting a bit murky for many. It really doesn’t matter, though, as it’s the fun of the roast that is paramount.

It was an odd assortment of panel guests on the dais,

including Audrey Meadows discussing Hef’s views on women. In a not-so-funny presentation, she gives him a portrait of his head in a Bunny’s body. Ha ha — not.

Dick Martin and Joey Bishop had a few good zingers. The problem with some of these shows is that instead of being a great gimmick as part of Dean’s comedy hour with some really terrific performers, it became this weekly show of its own with ...

      • people being roasted because they had NBC shows or were just high profile. The dais wasn’t full of their friends and such who could really tease them, but roast regulars hired to appear on just about all the of the shows. It just didn’t work as well with people like Hefner being the honoree.

There was a difference, too, in the Man of the Week shows like this one and then the Man of

the Hour shows, and that was that at the end of these Week shows, Martin did an exit speech inside the empty showroom, usually adding a joke or two as he said goodnight. I liked that touch and miss it from the more robotic shows where it just ends after the honored person gives their speech. Again, that’s part of the evolution of the roasts.

I wouldn’t hurry out to get this particular roast.
