Baseball manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Leo Durocher was the Man of the Week on this episode of The Dean Martin Comedy Hour, which has been repackaged as The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast for distribution. Actually, Durocher was retired at the time of this get together.

It was a fairly good group on the dais

overall, including Dizzy Dean, who was pretty funny and Chuck Conners, a one time baseball player himself. Conners had some great lines, dealing with open zippers and going to the bathroom.

      >From football, Alex Karras spoke at the podium, too. He made me yawn. His delivery was way too slow and forced.

      • He’s a better actor, or became a better actor, than he was a roaster. He just wasn’t entertaining as yet.

While it was a diverse dais and there were some laughs, it just felt very middle of the road for me. Foster Brooks doing his drunk umpire routine had some moments, but it’s not something

that makes me laugh all that much.

Jack Carter did a decent job and arguably was the funniest roaster of the night, which is unusual. I didn’t always like his stuff, but he was on during this event.

Durocher’s own remarks were just average.

All in all, a one time viewing is all you need of this hour.
