Basketball great Wilt Chamberlain was the Man of the Week for this outing of The Dean Martin Comedy Hour, an event that is often sold as The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts.

Another basketball player of the day, Happy Hairston, was one of the roasters. He actually had some good barbs in his presentation,

especially the one about Wilt wanting to change his name to Bill Russell. You could hear the ‘ewwwws’ throughout.

Ken Berry of Mayberry RFD took the podium as a fan of basketball, he stated as he started his routine. He did his bit like a Vaudeville act, and it worked. I ...

      • was cracking up at his stuff.

Two of my favorites were also on the dais, horse jockey Bill Shoemaker and actor George Kennedy. I figured Shoe and Wilt would have some joke going about being long lost brothers, and that’s what they did, and then Kennedy added some other type of family zingers.

        I enjoyed both roasters.

I wasn’t that crazy about Wilt Chamberlain’s return zings at those who had roasted him. It was too labored and I just didn’t laugh. You can’t really blame the guy; he’s an athlete, not a comic. Overall, though, this program was a decent piece of entertainment.
