The robust man who starred as private eye Cannon and who had the wonderful voice, William Conrad, was the honoree for this issue of The Dean Martin Comedy Hour. He was the Man of the Week, the one who took the heat delivered by the various roasters of the evening.

      Phyllis Diller started

it off, calling Conrad “a fat Robert Goulet with mumps.” Gee, I hate that but it was terribly funny, and Conrad was laughing big time at it.

Petula Clark was surprisingly good in her roast. She professed herself to be Conrad’s mistress. It could best be described as a cute little ...

      • naughty segment that was a ton of fun. Conrad was interactive in the process, and I loved it.

Up next was Bob Newhart with his dry sense of humor. It worked. It was a long setup, but it was funny. I laughed out loud, and that’s the best sign of

        success.

Conrad was a hoot in his counterattack. Every one of his zingers was right on target, and he ended with a bang, too, with Conrad quoting the character “Maude”. I very much enjoyed this episode. It had some slow moments to it, but the funny bits were very funny and carried the show.
