Laundry Service Album by Shakira
  • She has always been one of my favorite female recording artists because she is an amazing vocalist as well as an extremely talented dancer
  • Her music video for She Wolf was proof of the fact that she is one of the best dancers that the music industry has ever seen, comparable to Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul
  • One of her very first albums was Laundry Service and I think it has been her best out of her entire career
  • Many people no longer listen to the hits that came from that album, but it was definitely a great achievement in her career
  • She has an interesting voice and a great range

Shakira is one of those artists who has been extremely successful yet somehow manages to fly under the radar until she has huge hits like “She Wolf” or “Beautiful Liar”. She has always been one of my favorite female recording artists because she is an amazing vocalist as well as an extremely talented dancer. Her music video for “She Wolf” was proof of the fact that she is one of the best dancers that the music industry has ever seen, comparable to Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul. One of her very first albums was “Laundry Service” and I think it has been her best out of her entire career. Many people no longer listen to the hits that came from that album, but it was definitely a great achievement in her career.

“Whenever Wherever” was the major hit off of “Laundry Service”. That was one of the very first English songs that she released. It was originally written in Spanish (with a song called “Suerte”) so she recorded a second version of it. That is when her

popularity really started and I am glad that she made the decision to cross over to recording songs in English. It proves that she is versatile. This song sounds very passionate. It is about being together no matter what. Whenever or wherever, she wants to be with her lover.

This album has songs in both English and Spanish. “Que Me Quedes Tu” is one of my favorite songs of all time, not to mention my favorite on this album. This is a song that was first on another album. I am glad that she decided to include it on Laundry Service. It was very successful on the Latin Billboard charts but never really became popular in the United States. It basically means “As Long as You Stay With Me” and is about being alright no matter the circumstances just as long as the person you love is right there by your side. Even though I do not speak fluent Spanish, I love the message that this song sends. “Te Dejo Madrid” is another Spanish song on ...

      • the album that means “I leave you Madrid”. It is about how much she loves Madrid. This song has an awesome music video to go with it where Shakira pretends to be a bullfighter.

The lyrics to “Poem to a Horse” seem kind of silly. It is one of those songs that contains phrases that may have made more sense in Spanish. There are lines that seem kind of nonsensical, but it is a good song nonetheless. “Underneath Your Clothes” was definitely one of the most popular of the songs on this CD in the United States. It is very slow and kind of somber, but it is a very great song. I definitely think that Shakira sounds much better in all of her Spanish songs, at least on this album. I think that is because this is one of her first efforts to cross over into the English music industry so she is just getting on her feet. On later albums, her English songs are just as good as the Spanish ones.

        The entire album has

a bunch of different sounds that somehow manage to all work extremely well together. Even though each song sounds different, the album as a whole is very cohesive. Despite the two different languages, I think that this album can be enjoyed by anyone. You don’t have to speak Spanish to appreciate “Ojos Asi” or “Que Me Quedes Tu”. The vocals are amazing on every track and the instrumentals are much different than the ones you would find on the CDs put out by American recording artists. Some of the sounds have more of a pop feel to them while others sound more like rock and roll. Shakira is not really defined by one category. She can sing in English and in Spanish and she can mix up a variety of different styles and pull each and every one of them off well. I love her music and I still listen to Laundry Service after all of these years. She has an interesting voice and a great range. One day I would love to see her live in concert!
