The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year in, is as short novel by Charles Dickens. It was written the year after the more famous A Christmas Carol, and is the second in a series of Christmas books.

It tells the story of Trotty, a

messenger, and how poor people like him and his daughter and her fiancée are treated by the upper classes.

After some depressive meetings, he falls asleep while listening to the chimes of the bell tower and dreams about how everything has gone wrong.

He wakes up while he’s begging the chimes to save his daughter, just ...

      • in time for her wedding.

The story is not bad, but I think it’s maybe a bit too moralistic for me.

Or to say it in another way, it’s not enough story to go with all the moral.

It’s well written, but as it’s much shorter than most of Dickens novels there’s not the same multitude

of more or less comical characters and there’s not enough things happening to make it really exciting.

I like the message of the story, “never give up, never surrender”, but it’s not my favourite Dickens novel.

But, as it’s short and doesn’t have too many characters, it’s less confusing than many of the longer books.
