The great and awesome Jimmy Stewart is the Man of the Hour in The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast, which was taped in Las Vegas. Right off the bat, I’ll say that the wonder of this hour is the quality of the talent there to roast Stewart. There are some incredibly talented performers at the dais — June Allyson, Lucille Ball, Greer Garson, Henry Fonda, Janet Leigh,

and Mickey Rooney, just to name a few.

I especially loved seeing Allyson, who joked that she’d been married to Stewart so many times in movies that instead of residuals, she gets alimony. Then she said that she was left behind by him so much in movies that she didn’t have a husband, she had a pen pal. She was just great.

      Fonda’s bit is great, too.

      • Highlights are shown of Stewart’s movies, centering on his vocal singing abilities, or lack of.

On the other hand, what are Foster Brooks and LaWanda Page doing on this show? It’s ridiculous to have them on the show just for comedic effect. It wasn’t needed. I hated it then, and I hate it now.

Tony Randall had a laughing out loud moment with a little goof and

assistance from Milton Berle. It was hysterical as he worked for a legitimate laugh. Likewise, Rich Little got Stewart to stand up and try to imitate himself, and then got the audience into it. It was a tremendous bit.

This was one of the best Dean Martin roasts ever done. It had star power, legitimate guests, and some really tremendous laughs that were genuine and hearty.
