Don’t be confused by the title of The Dean Martin Comedy Hour. Dean Martin began doing roasts on his TV show and they went over so well that they became their own unofficial series of sort — The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast. Those participants were usually labeled ‘man of the hour’. This was one of the early incarnations, however, and was still under the billing of the regular show, though it

was an expanded episode, taking up 90 minutes of time.

The panel was appropriate, with a number of comedians who could dish it out as good as Don Rickles, who was being roasted. A lot of this humor was genuine. By this, I mean that there was a lot of scripted material provided to the panelists, but with comedians of this caliber, they made their bits their own.

      • couple of minutes at the podium and Rickles’ good friend, Bob Newhart, was fantastic. It’s the segments like Newhart’s that make the roasts their best.

Martin had a lot more time in this 90-minute as well, and he was very funny. In some of the latter roasts, he plays on the drunken bit way too much and loses some of his magic, but he was right on for this roast.

        The surprise for me

was astronaut Gene Cernan, who did an okay job with his delivery. He had a great line about being able to spend 10 minutes with Rickles without punching him in the mouth. He turned out to be a highlight.

Rickles had a very long final speech, almost 15 minutes, and it was superb. I miss this humor a lot. He and Newhart make this 90 minutes as wonderful as it was.
