If you’ve seen the 2009 movie Adventureland’s poster, you probably wouldn’t think it’s a kind of dark coming-of-age story. Well, it is. Anyone expecting laugh-out-loud comedy in the same vein as director Greg Mottola’s previous film, Superbad, would be in for a disappointment. I was glad to find, however, that Adventureland offered a good story nonetheless, with its own brand of comedy.

Jesse Eisenberg stars as the protagonist, and he does a good job conveying the confusion and

the struggle of a kid who just graduated from college and suddenly finds himself in a rut—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Lack of money prevents him from going on a dream vacation in Europe and subsequently prevents him from enrolling at NYU. He has to work at a theme park called Adventureland, where he meets his love interest played by Kristen Stewart (of the Twilight saga).

Compared to Superbad, there’s a different kind of comedy involved in Adventureland. It’s ...

      • a kind not quite appreciated as well as your usual comedy with slapstick and witty banter, but more of how the film employs a satirical approach to numerous social issues—issues such as drugs, extramarital relationships, family life, and even the kind of semi-caste system that separates groups of a particular society.

One other interesting aspect of the film is the soundtrack. Since the story is set in 1987, music tracks are mostly 80s songs. These songs touch on

the nostalgia for older viewers (pardon the expression), and they also fit the scenes quite well.

Overall, Adventureland is a good movie. It might not have the brand of comedy people might have wanted to see, but there’s a good narrative to compensate for it. This is basically a coming-of-age film, and you do see tremendous growth on the character of Eisenberg. The love story is also atypical, and that, I believe, is reason enough to watch the film.
