A Man Called Hawk: If Memory Serves has an interesting premise, one I haven’t quite seen before, at least not in this type of presentation. The story revolves around Alex Chavin (Paul Butler), a Haitian man who remembers everything he hears and reads. It’s not a photographic memory, but something more genetic. He’s been having nightmares lately, and his daughter, Nicole (Misha Mck), is concerned. She talks

to the Old Man, who refers her to Hawk (Avery Brooks). Conveniently, he just happens to be parked in his car on the street.

Chavin confides to Hawk that he was the ledger for the old regime in Haiti, and among the things he was told to remember was a series of numbers. He didn’t realize until much later, after coming to America, what it tied into, that being a ...

      • large amount of money secretly taken out of Haiti.

He’s right, and now those men are after him because he has the location of the vault where the money was secretly placed.

While this story has some slow moments, it has an angle that is refreshing. I don’t usually like these Haitian voodoo stories, but this one is done outside of the normal environment and that gives it a different energy.

        I’m still

not crazy about the Hawk character. The few times I take to him throughout the series is when, as in this one, he’s playing an instrument (in this show, it’s the piano). There’s something about the bond of music that gives him humanity that I don’t tend to see otherwise. Star Avery Brooks is a musician and actually helped compose the show’s theme.

Overall, this is a decent hour of entertainment.
