From 1961, The Guns of Navarone is one of the most famous wartime films, and it has quite the cast to help make it that way. Gregory Peck has the starring role as Capt. Keith Mallory. Also present are Richard Harris, Anthony Quayle, David Niven, Anthony Quinn, Percy Herbert, Irene Papas,

Gia Scala, and my favorite of the film, James Darren as Pvt. Spyros Pappadimos.

This is fairly lengthy film which I watched a lot as a kid, mainly because of Darren’s presence as one of the commandos who go on this mission to try and take out the fortress guns which are preventing the rescue of thousands of troops stuck on the Greek island of Kiros.

Like any war movie, there’s a lot of action. That’s to be expected. In addition, there’s some strife and conflict amongst the small rescue team that tries to take out the guns.

The cinematography is wonderful in this film, with landscapes ...

that are picturesque and which bring depth to the environment in which much of the movie takes place. It’s a travelogue, only during a dark time.

Niven is particularly powerful in this film. He has a great scene when he deduces who the traitor among the group is. Then he factors again

later in that same dramatic moment. I so often think of Niven for his comedic work, but this is intense stuff, and he’s very good at it.

This is a classic, and while parts of it move a little slowly for my taste, it’s an excellent film that tells a piece of history.
