CHiPs: Flashback! is the final episode of the first season, and it’s terrific and is hands down the best of the year. In the course of this hour, we finally see just how Jon Baker (Larry Wilcox) met Frank Poncherello (Erik Estrada).

The catalyst for the flashbacks which combine to tell the story

is the arrival of a new officer, Brent Delaney, a very cocky kid played superbly by Joe Penny. Delaney reminds everyone of Ponch when he began. Penny plays the part with suitable arrogance. He does a good job here.

In the flashbacks, Edward James Olmos portrays Henry, a friend of Ponch ...

      • who is enticing Ponch towards the wrong side of the law. I’d forgotten that was Olmos in this part. He’s quite good and shows the talent that many would come to know as time progressed.

I really enjoy the flashback bits that give us Jon’s and Ponch’s story. I like that

it’s not just one long flashback; rather, it comes in pieces, from both of them, with something triggering the next recollection. That’s a bit different and makes the show a bit novel.

This was a super way of ending the season and keeping fans excited about what might come in the second season.
