Talinn, Estonia
  • On this note, I would particularly recommend the restaurants Peppersack and Olde Hansa, both of which offer traditional Estonian foods in a medieval setting at not unreasonable prices

Talinn, the capital of Estonia, is an up and coming destination for weekend breaks. Cheap flights are now available through Easyjet from London Stansted, so now there is no excuse for not visiting this fascinating medieval city.

Talinn is divided into two distinct parts, the old town, situated within its medieval walls, and the new town, which lies immediately outside the walls

and looks pretty much like every other modern European city.

We stayed in the Comfort Hotel, Talinn, which is about 40 minutes walk from the old town.

The less athletic may choose to get a bus, from just outside the hotel, or book a taxi, which are cheap and reliable.

Once in the old town, it is clear that everything is geared to ...

      • tourists.

Girls proffering sweetened almonds are dressed in medieval costume, whilst restaurants recreate the atmosphere of a medieval Great Hall (some offering the sight of swordfighting on selected evenings.

On this note, I would particularly recommend the restaurants Peppersack and Olde Hansa, both of which offer traditional Estonian foods in a medieval setting at not unreasonable prices.

For a good overview of the

history of Talinn, it is worth visiting the Town Museum.

Other sites worth a mention include the Nevsky Cathedral, the Town Hall Square, and the many shops selling traditional Estonian craftwork.

If you are thinking of traveling on through the Baltic states there are good coach links available from Talinn, whilst if you are off to Russia, there is a good rail link to St.

        Petersberg.

        Happy travelling!
