Ski jumping is always a hoot to watch. Get a steady fast speed and then fly through the air, careful not to land too early or too late. Seeing someone gliding through the air is exhilarating for me. Their form has to be perfect as they get parallel over their skis. It’s thrilling.

There are two rounds in this competition of ski jumping at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic games. It’s called the

Team Large Hill as it’s a team versus an individual competition.

In the first round, America’s Peter Frenette had a respectable jump. He’s only 17 so has time to build towards the 2014 Olympics. He did the best of the four team members, and this really isn’t one of the USA’s strongholds. They actually finished the round way down, 11th of 12 teams so their day ended early.

Slovenia’s Peter Prevc is young, too, and he ...

      • had a terrific flight as well. He looked so calm, like he was taking it all in. I find that incredible, to see such poise and beauty in the air. The Slovenians outdid the Americans, finishing the first round in 8th, which meant they advanced to the second round of jumps (only the top 8 teams moved on).

The ones to watch, though, are the teams from Norway, Germany, and Austria, and it’s not just

distance but form that count. These folks were at the top in the first round and definitely went into the second round favored to win. It was just a matter of which one.

What I love is the drama involved. These guys have to time those jumps to perfection. For Austria, Gregor Schlierenzauer was magnificent. He led his team to the gold.

It was exciting to watch, even if America didn’t come close this time around.
