The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic games continued its biathlon events with the Women’s 12.5 Pursuit Mass Start. I prefer the mass starts over the individual, separated timed events. I want to see competition, fast and furious. It leads to more thrills and excitement, and that’s what we got with this event.

I know this isn’t easy; no Olympic sports are, but there’s something about seeing everyone starting out together and

just seeing who can manage to overtake the others that is ultra exciting. Still, I am amazed at what it takes to compose oneself when after sprinting across the snow for a bit, you then have to get on your belly and fire five shots without missing. It takes a lot to steady yourself.

In fact, at one point in this event, all of the leaders missed at least one, and ...

      • some two, of their shots. Taking penalty laps for each miss is a hefty toll and it took all but one of them out of the hunt for the medals. It totally changed the race.

For one competitor, it was really painful. It’s not that she missed, but she came into the last standing position to fire and just stood there, and stood there, and stood there. It was

almost 30 seconds before she fired a first shot. Did she freeze? I don’t know, but it cost her the gold.

The real thrill of the race was watching Germany’s Magdalena Neuner come from behind to win the gold. She looked so surprised. She hit the ‘go’ button, though, once she realized she had a shot, and it was a joy to watch her pass her competitors and win.
