The Wilkes Dining Room is located in an old three story house in Savannah Georgia. It used to be a boarding house years ago, and has now become a tourist attraction that is so popular you almost can’t leave Savannah without at least one person asking you if you’ve been there yet. There is a line around the building before the doors even open for lunch nearly every day.

There are two good reasons for this. One, the food is great.

Two, the experience is so unique. Rather than seating people at individual tables and have

them order their food, Mrs Wilkes has a completely different idea about how a meal should be served.

People are brought into the dining room in groups of ten, and ten people, usually mostly strangers, are sat at one large table. You don’t order food at Mrs Wilkes.

They just bring it. And bring it, and bring it.

About 15-20 or so different dishes are brought to your table, and you pass them around the table, taking what you want. This encourages friendly talking at the table and is quite fun! Many times you will find fellow ...

Most of the food is home style Southern cooking at its best- with fried chicken, biscuits, various vegetables, meatloaf, beef stew, greens, macaroni and cheese, candied yams, and finished with the unforgettable Southern dessert, homemade banana pudding or a choice of one other dessert. You will leave full and happy.

I believe the menu changes slightly daily. This is a place and an experience I will never forget and I look

forward to visiting again the next time I venture to Savannah.

The staff is wonderful as well, with typical Southern manners and friendliness. Meals cost about $16 or so and are worth every penny.

Don’t let the line deter you- it would not be as much fun if there weren’t so many people. Even I, who am not fond of crowds, can appreciate the value of social eating here! Just be sure to get there early and you shouldn’t have to wait long.

(remember, every time a group goes in, it’s ten people- so it goes quickly. ) Bring your appetite.
