Sarah SilvermanItem: Sarah Silverman
Sarah Silverman is certainly one of the busiest comics out there, and stands above most of her female peers. That’s not to say she’s superior, but there’s a lot to admire about a comedienne like this.
Silverman presents herself as an unassuming, sweet natured individual - not in any big way, but enough so that she can get away with some really awful musings. No taboo is left unturned as Silverman tackles race, sexuality, religion and death in a very matter of fact way, but with a playfulness that makes you feel less guilty about laughing, and more endeared to the comedienne herself. Her television appearances are particularly entertaining, with Silverman working well alongside pretty any host or presenter she’s put up against. She never takes a backseat or becomes the foil, instead she quickly gains the upper hand but remains fair to her hosts at all times. Her shows are particularly impressive, with a refreshing mix of surrealism and outright sillyness. She does tend to polarize opinion but there’s something very infectious about her humour. You’ll have seen her time and again on the Jimmy Kimmel, amongst others, and this is where she really shines, working best with other people, whether they’re on her wavelength or not. She also shows surprising versatility with her music videos and lively songs either wormed into her own work or brought out to play elsewhere. Rating: 9
