We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights last August 21-23,2009. This hotel stay was not planned but we had to go back to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital to get our car fixed properly before continuing with the journey. We were looking for a hotel which was conveniently located in the city center to enable us to check on the progress of the works on the car regularly. The guys who towed our car suggested this hotel and it seemed to be a good choice.
Check-in was relatively quick as we arrived in the night. We were given a family room which had 2 rooms (1 for the adults and another one for the kids). In the middle was a small toilet and bathroom. Unfortunately, the toilet flush was not working properly. I had to open the tank cover and pull the lever from there to flush it properly. Our room was also facing the main street where I can imagine that it would be difficult to sleep in when the traffic starts in the morning. Lucky for us, we were there during the weekend and it was less noisy. The rooms however, were clean and the beds comfortable. There was also satellite TV in the room and tea/coffemaking facilities. The Thuringerhof Protea Hotel offers the usual amenities like a restaurant, bar and conference facilities. Just in front of the bar was a nice courtyard where you could relax, drink and even eat if the rooms or the restaurant become too stuffy or boring at one point. Breakfast which was a buffet consisted of the usual eggs, bread, bacon, pastries, coffee, tea, milk, cereals and juices. It was included in the room rate and it was adequate. I only had one occasion to eat dinner at the hotel’s restaurant and the food was not bad either with quite big portions. However, service was really slow and it seemed like ages before our orders arrived, my kids were already nodding off at the table. I recommend this hotel if you are looking for a central location in Windhoek to arrange your further travels, do some sightseeing and perhaps shopping. It is not such a big/fancy hotel but it was sufficient to meet our needs: a good location where you can easily find transport, clean rooms and acceptable food. Rating: 6
