Ugab Terrace LodgeItem: Ugab Terrace Lodge
Ugab Terrace Lodge is about 4 hours drive from Windhoek, Namibia. It is located on a hilly area and while we were actually warned by the reservations office that it is a very steep climb to the Lodge, we eventually managed to arrive at the Lodge on our own without asking reception to pick us up at the bottom entrance. My family and I stayed at this lodge for 2 nights last August 15-17, 2009.
The lodge offers various types of accommodation such as a bungalows, luxury tents and camp sites. It also has a restaurant, bar, rock swimming pool and even an RV campground. Our bungalow which was made of local materials consisted of 4 single beds, a toilet and shower. Interior décor is African style with furniture made from local wood. I liked that there were plenty of windows to ensure enough light and air in the room. I also found its verandah very convenient as it had a wonderful view of the Ugab terraces. I could enjoy the scenery of the terraces in privacy or watch the stars which seemed brighter on African skies in the night. It was also a delight to just open the curtains and view the scenery around us from our own beds. The view from the bar side was also great and from there, I could see the famous Vingerklip (a 35 meter sedimentary rock) and the Ugab terraces. This seemed to be the main selling point of this Lodge – the breathtaking scenery. I also found that the staff were all friendly and nice. In addition, I always felt that we were welcome at this Lodge as the owners made it a point at mealtimes (dinners mostly) to greet everyone and asked how things were. We did not have anything to complain as we found the room always clean, the staff helpful and the food (buffet style) of enough variation. This Lodge is recommended not only for the reasons mentioned above but also because it has a good location. It can serve as an alternative place to stay or as a base when you are visiting Twyfelfontein and the surrounding areas and could not find any accommodation there. This was our case and we could not find any free space in Twyfelfontein despite booking 3 months in advance. From the Lodge, day trips are quite feasible to Twyfelfontein to see the rock paintings, Burnt Mountain, the Petrified Forest and the Organ Pipes. Rating: 7
