Mt. Etjo Safari Lodge is located in a private game reserve about 250 kms. from Windhoek, Namibia. My family and I stayed at this Lodge last August 12-13, 2009, an overnight stop while going to the northern part of the country.
The room we got in the Lodge was overlooking a huge garden. Just in front of the garden is a river with some animals enjoying an occasional drink. Our room consisted of 2 double beds (large enough for 2 adults), a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi (there is a switch on fee for its use), toilet and shower. Funnily, the shower knob was located too high to reach even for an adult like myself. My kids who are not actually little had to climb on the edge of the Jacuzzi to open the shower. We had also 2 large sofas in the room for lounging and reading. I liked the way the room was tastefully decorated, in African ethnic style. It found it quite spacious as well for 4 people. There was also a big swimming pool, 2 dining areas, patio and a bar. For additional fees, activites such as game drives, lion feed, birding can be arranged. We did a game drive(saw some animals) and a lion feed activity in the night (scary and gory). As the location is quite remote and very peaceful, I can imagine that this must be a good place for couples or honeymooners. I saw several and we were, perhaps the only family in that Lodge at that time. My major misery in this Lodge was the food. There was no possibility at all of ordering a la carte. Lunch was quite good with enough varities of salads, bread, soups, tuna quiches and fruits. Dinner, however, was another story. All of their main dishes for dinner were just game meat. I could understand this method of enticing tourists to taste something different and even exotic but I could not understand why the staff could not be more child-friendly or be more accommodating to the guests’ needs. When I asked if my kids could have something else apart from game meat, the guest hostess simply replied that she is sorry but that was all they had. She did not even offer an alternative. Eat what was served or starve was something more like it. For the price we paid ($ 300/night exclusive of drinks and activities), I cannot say that this is a good value stay. I did not find the staff very helpful or very friendly. I am not likely to go back to this lodge and although I was not completely satisfied with my stay, I do recognize that it could be a nice place to relax and enjoy nature if only they had better customer service and more choices in food.
