I have been using Mucinex for about five years now to help a chronic condition, with a doctor’s supervision. In general, I use regular Mucinex, but on occasion, I do use Mucinex DM Maximum Strength.

Mucinex’s main ingredient is guafenesin, which is used to thin out mucus, and lessen chest congestion. For some, it also helps lesson head congestion, too.

Mucinex is easily available in many retail institutions in packages of twenty and forty pills each. They are extended release bi-layer tablets that contain 600 milligrams of guafenesin. It is a twelve hour timed release pill, so that you are only supposed to have to take it twice a day. Because it is in tablet form, though, it does take a little bit of time to kick in. However, the time release does actually work, and carry the medicine throughout.

Mucinex DM Maximum Strength is also readily available in many retail institutions, but in packages of fourteen and twenty eight. It has 1200 milligrams of guafenesin and 60 milligrams of dextromethorphan, too. The DM, or dextromethorphan aids in cutting back on coughing, in turn making the patient feel even better. Like the regular Mucinex, the Mucinex DM is also a twelve hour time release bi-layer tablet.

NOTE: There are also larger sizes of Mucinex available, sometimes at retail establishments, but generally at websites.

I have had great success with both types of Mucinex over the years, and highly suggest it to anyone who wants to try it. The cost is not horrible, but varies from place to place.
