Vernon GholstonItem: Vernon Gholston
I was just reading about Vernon Gholston not too long ago and remember how big of a star he was coming out of college. As I kind of guessed would happen, he, at this point in his career, has not lived up to his NFL potential and is getting to the dreaded bust status. This guy was drafted by the Jets to be a dominating pass rusher. Yet, since being drafted, he has yet to record even one sack. How is that possible? In fact, he’s only averaging about one tackle per game that he has played. That’s just pathetic because it means, not only is he not getting to the quarterback, he’s not getting involved in very many plays on the field. I think he got something like $32 million when he was signed as a rookie. His lack of production shows exactly why the NFL needs some sort of rookie pay scale for the first round of the draft; simply because that money could have gone to a veteran player that is being more productive. And, I’m sure there are plenty on this roster that are doing more but making a heck of a lot less money than Gholston is. Unless he starts showing something, I think this is going to be yet another wasted pick by the New York Jets who will likely end up with another team in a few years as a back up making near minimum wage.
