I have been fighting a really bad cold lately and needed some relief from my stuffy head. So, I ended up running up the street to the store to buy a box of Shower Soothers.
First of all, the price of these things is outrageous. It was $4.99 for three tablets that you are supposed to use in your shower to produce a vapor steam (similar to a vaporizer) to help clear your sinuses. I said, at that moment, that if I was going to buy them, they better work well.
They didn’t.
The concept is a good one. The tablet sets in your tub under the shower stream and produces vapors that are similar to Vicks products. And, it did manage to clear my nose a little bit.
But, in practice, the tablets don’t work as well as you would think.
First of all, if you are actually taking a shower rather than just standing in the shower breathing in the vapors (which seems like a waste of time considering you could just have a vaporizer), it really doesn’t get the full effect. It’s easy to kick the tablet out of the way and, if you are showering, the shower stream isn’t exactly hitting that tablet directly. Not to mention, if your tub is like mine and doesn’t drain very fast, you are going to have the tablet floating in water.
As it dissolved, it left kind of a gooey mess in the tub which did get on my foot. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to be touching this thing with my bare skin so it got me a bit worried that I would break out in some sort of rash or something.
Like I mentioned before, I did have my nose cleared a bit. But, that wasn’t a long lasting result of using this. Within about 10 minutes after getting out of the shower, my nose was once again stuffed up and I was about as miserable as I was before using this.
My wife, who is also sick, gave this product a try too. She said she didn’t even smell the vapors; though I will admit, I could when I walked into the bathroom right after she had used it. In fact, they did linger in the bathroom for a couple hours after. Too bad they still weren’t strong enough to do me any good.
In my opinion, I pretty much wasted $5. I could have gotten the same results from just about any vaporizer on the market and wouldn’t have had to take a shower to do it.
If you are suffering a cold, I would suggest saving your money by avoiding this product.
