This is a surprisingly compelling tale. It took me a few tries to venture beyond the first few chapters; it was quite a dreary start. After that, I did not want to put the book down at all. Laura Shane has had a hard life, losing the people who loved her and whom she loved – parents, good friends and husband. A stranger hovered in the background, appearing at odd times to save her. He was an enigma; his appearance was often unpredictable and unreliable that she had almost once given up on him. When her husband was killed by another mysterious man, Laura had armed herself with an impressive collection of arsenal to protect herself and her young son. The mystery of her guardian angel was slowly revealed. Laura Shane was certainly an admirable protagonist – the author had created a woman of practical resilience, none of those irritating female macho or tough aggressive traits that some authors had given to their female heroines. I certainly like this character – down to earth and strong. Reading the story was like a slow slide down a steep hill that picked up speed towards the end. After the first half, it was sheer suspense – I was hooked. The romance angle, especially on the part of the guardian angel was old-fashioned and sweet. The author had managed this marvelously, otherwise it would have been corny and reduce the appeal of the story! This is one of the best mystery books I have ever read – such a delightful mixture of suspense, mystery, sci-fi and romance! Rating: 8
